Your guide to the best of Prague and the Czech Republic

Top Tips for Visiting Prague (from a Local)

Published: February 14, 2025 By: Jana Nováková Categories: Travel Tips, Prague

Prague is one of Europe’s most enchanting cities, but a little insider knowledge goes a long way. Here are my top tips for making the most of your visit – gathered from years of living in the heart of the Czech capital.

1. Avoid the Peak Tourist Hours at Prague Castle

Prague Castle is stunning, but it’s also heaving by midday. Go early – around 8 AM – or later in the afternoon (after 4 PM). You’ll dodge the worst of the crowds and get nicer light for photos. Entrance is free after 6 PM for the grounds, but interior visits end earlier.

2. Use Public Transport – It’s Excellent

The metro, trams, and buses are reliable, cheap, and cover every corner. Buy a 72-hour ticket (310 CZK) for unlimited travel. Validate it on your first ride. Don’t forget to stamp your ticket in the yellow box – inspectors are frequent and fines are steep.

3. Eat Where the Locals Eat

Skip the overpriced restaurants around Old Town Square. Walk a few blocks to Vinohrady or Letná. Try Lokál for classic Czech pub food (the pork knee and Svijany beer are musts). Or visit the farmer’s market at Náplavka on Saturdays.

“Prague is not what you see – it’s what you feel. Take time to wander the side streets and soak in the atmosphere.” – local saying

4. Watch for Pickpockets (but don’t be paranoid)

Like any major city, tourist-heavy spots (Charles Bridge, Wenceslas Square, tram #22) can attract pickpockets. Keep your wallet in a front pocket or a zipped bag. That said, Prague is generally very safe – use common sense and you’ll be fine.

5. Learn a Few Czech Phrases

Locals appreciate effort. Dobrý den (good day), děkuji (thank you), and prosím (please/you’re welcome) go a long way. Most people under 40 speak good English, but older Czechs may not. A smile and a basic greeting open doors.

Bonus tip: If you’re here in December, try the hot mulled wine (svařák) at the Christmas markets – but avoid the ones directly on Old Town Square. Head to Náměstí Míru or Havelské tržiště for a more authentic experience.

Safe travels and enjoy Prague – it really is a magical city.

Great tips! I’d add that the beer is cheaper than water at many pubs – definitely try the local Pilsner Urquell.

Thanks for the mention of Lokál – it’s my go-to place. Also, don’t miss the Lennon Wall if you’re near Kampa Park.
